Work your proper hours day
Well it would seem that we are giving away a staggering £27.4 billion in unpaid overtime throughout the UK. This is not the high flying bankers we have heard so much about lately but the average working person in the street. The money is being given away by working over time for free. This means that if everyone who worked unpaid overtime did it from the start of the year; they would start getting paid on Friday 26 February. And what is worse is that the figures are up on the previous year. There are not however more people working unpaid overtime which in turn must mean that while we have suffered job losses and shorter working hours during the recession, the number of people doing it is actually down by 168,000 on last year, meaning the 5.07m remaining are putting in even longer hours.

Work Your Proper Hours Day for 2010 will be 26 February, but your own pay day may come earlier or later, depending on the hours you work above your contracted hours. Use our online unpaid overtime calculator to find out when you can celebrate paying off your long hours debt.
